Middelstum

Middelstum ( Gronings: Milnsom ) is a village in the Dutch municipality Loppersum in the province of Groningen. Beginning of 2006 there were around 2,400 people in Middelstum.

Middelstum was also the name of the former municipality Middelstum, whose capital was Middelstum. But this church is 1990 in the two communities Loppersum and Eemsmond, former Hefshuizen, risen.

History

Was first mentioned in the 9th century Middelstum in a deed that gave the country a monastery in Fulda. The large, built in the fifteenth century church of Sint- Hippolytuskerk dominates the cityscape of Middelstum. In addition there exists a small, originating from the 17th century museum.

On August 8, 2006, an earthquake shook Middelstum. It had a magnitude of 3.5 on the Richter scale and is seen as a result of the reduction in the Erdgasgewinnug in the region. It was the most severe earthquake in the northern provinces of the Netherlands.
