Jóhannes Gunnarsson

Jóhannes Gunnarsson SMM ( born August 3, 1897 in Reykjavík, Iceland, † June 17, 1972 ) was Roman Catholic bishop and apostolic vicar in Iceland.

Life

Jóhannes Gunnarsson, whose grandfather was a deputy in the Icelandic Althing and his father converted to Catholicism, the only native, Roman Catholic Icelanders was for twenty years. He completed his schooling in Denmark, studied with the Jesuits in Iceland and finished his theological studies in the Netherlands. He joined the Congregation of the Montfort Fathers and received on 14 June 1924, the sacrament of Holy Orders in the Cathedral of Reykjavík.

In 1942 he was appointed by Pope Pius XII. appointed Titular Bishop of Hólar and appointed Vicar Apostolic in Iceland.
