Johannes Hoornbeek

John Hoornbeek (also: Hoorn Beeck, Horenbeek; * November 4, 1617 in Haarlem, † September 1, 1666 in Leiden ) was a Dutch Reformed theologian.

Life

Hoornbeeks family roots lie in Flanders, where his grandfather fled with the name John before religious persecution in 1548 to Holland. He was the son of the merchant Hornbeek Tobias and his wife Jannecke Baerts. After he had received his first education, he moved with sixteen years, the University of Leiden, where he lectures by Daniel Heinsius, Constantine L' Empereur van Oppyck (1551-1648), Jacobus Golius (1596-1667), Franco Petri Burgersdijk, Anthony Thysius the Elder and Anthony Walaeus (1573-1639) attended. The plague forced him to leave suffering and incorporated in 1635 to study at the newly founded University of Utrecht.

Here he was one year student of Gisbert Voetius. After he resumed his studies in Leiden, he was on March 1, 1639 preacher in Mülheim am Rhein. On December 21, 1643 he received his PhD in Utrecht under Voetius with the Disputationes decem anti- Judaicae (Utrecht 1644) Doctor of Theology, was born on March 3, 1644 and appointed preacher Maastricht in July 10, 1644 as a professor of theology at the University of Utrecht. This office he stepped in with the speech Oratio de inauguralis studio S. Theologiae ... VI idus Julii (Utrecht 1644). The following year he became a preacher in Utrecht. In Utrecht he had taught the oriental languages , dedicated to the dogma and the interpretation of the New Testament.

After he had become 1650/51 Rector of Utrecht alma mater, he went on June 9, 1654 as a professor of theology at the University of Leiden, which office he took up with the speech Oratio de inauguralis Scholis theologicis ... (Leiden 1654). In that capacity, he had to endure during that time, even hostility. The reason for this may have been his own polemical behavior against other theological movements within the Reformed Church. As a follower of his teacher Voetius he represented the orthodox flow of the Dutch Reformed Church and was an opponent of Johannes Cocceius (1603-1669) and Abraham Heidanus ( 1597-1678 ). However, he could also participate in the organizational tasks of the university and was Leidenener 1664/65 Rector of Leyden Alma Mater.

From his marriage with Anna Bernard 's sons Isaac and Hendrik Emilius come.
