Johannes Katschthaler

John Baptist Cardinal Katschthaler (* May 29, 1832 in Hippach, † February 27, 1914 in Salzburg) was from 1900 until his death Archbishop of Salzburg.

Life

John Baptist Katschthaler first studied in Vienna and on theology in Salzburg. He was professor of dogmatics in 1864 and taught there from 1875 in Innsbruck, the subjects history of dogma and apologetics.

In the Tyrolean Landtag Katschthaler became the representative of the Archbishop of Salzburg. 1880 Katschthaler was then canon in Salzburg and in 1882 director of the priests house. In 1891 he was ordained Titular Bishop of Cybistra and 1892 provost. His election as archbishop was 1900.

John Baptist Katschthaler was an honorary member of the Catholic Student Association AV Austria Innsbruck.

On June 22, 1903 it took Pope Leo XIII. as cardinal priest with the titular church of San Tommaso in Parione in the College of Cardinals. He promoted the idea of ​​a major re- establishment of a (Catholic) University in Salzburg, he supported church reforms and was a prominent patron of the church music and sacred art in general. His pastoral letter on the dignity of the priesthood excited in church circles quite a stir.

Archbishop Katschthaler was buried in the crypt of Salzburg Cathedral.
