John Baillie (theologian)

John Baillie ( born March 26, 1886 in Gairloch, † September 29, 1960 in Edinburgh) was a Scottish Presbyterian theologian.

Life

Baillie was born as the son of a minister of the Free Church of Scotland. He studied theology in Edinburgh, Jena and Marburg. In 1920 he was appointed lecturer at the " Auburn Theological Seminary ", 1928 at Emmanuel College in Toronto and in 1930 at Union Theological Seminary in New York. 1934 Baillie Professor of Theology and finally in 1950 rector of the " New College " at the University of Edinburgh. In 1943 he was Moderator of the General Assembly (General Assembly) of the Church of Scotland.

Baillie supported the Ecumenical Movement. He was from 1954 to 1961 one of the presidents of the World Council of Churches and sat unsuccessfully for a union of the Church of Scotland and the Church of England one.
