John C. Tully

John Charles Tully ( born May 17, 1942 in New York City ) is an American chemist who with physical chemistry and theoretical chemistry is concerned.

Tully graduated from Yale University with a bachelor's degree in 1964 and in 1968 at the University of Chicago in chemistry doctorate ( Photoionization of electron scattering and by atom and molecules). As a post - graduate student he was at the University of Colorado and Yale University. From 1970 he was at Bell Laboratories, where he led chemical materials science ( Materials Chemistry Research Department ) from 1985 the department. He became Professor of Chemistry, Physics and Applied Physics at Yale University in 1996. He is Arthur T. Kemp Professor of Chemistry and Director of the Center for Research on Interface Structures and Phenomena ( CRISP ).

He is concerned among other things with the simulation of chemical metal surfaces and the development of theoretical methods such as mixed classical- quantum dynamics, dynamics with path integrals, density functional theory with constraints and molecular dynamics with electronic transitions.

In 1982 he received the Distinguished Technical Staff Award from Bell Laboratories. In 1995 he was awarded the Peter Debye Award and the 1999 Madison Marshall Award of the American Chemical Society, 2008, Ira Remsen Award and the 2004 American Chemical Society Award in Theoretical Chemistry. In 1980 he became an honorary doctorate in Bordeaux. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering, the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science and is a Fellow of the American Physical Society. 2005 he was a Guggenheim Fellow.
