John Campbell (Jazzpianist)

John Campbell ( * July 7, 1955 in Bloomington ( Illinois)) is an American pianist of modern jazz and mainstream jazz.

Life and work

Campbell grew up in the Midwest and had as a young piano lessons. Later he studied at Illinois State University. In 1977 he moved to Chicago, then in the 1980s to New York City. There, Campbell worked with Terry Gibbs, Buddy DeFranco ( Holiday for Swing, 1988), Eddie Harris, James Moody, Charles McPherson and Clark Terry; End of the 80 years he accompanied Mel Tormé.

In 1989, Campbell first album under his own name for the label Contemporary Records on (After Hours). Clark Terry worked on the next album Turning Point (1990 ) as a guest soloist. In 1992 he played in the band of trumpeter Greg Gisbert, as well as Pete Minger.

In 1993, he took for Concord Jazz in the series At Maybeck: Maybeck Recital Hall Series, a highly acclaimed solo album, with interpretations of jazz standards like "Just Friends," " Darn That Dream ", Cole Porter's " You and the Night and the Music " and Johnny Mandel's " Emily ". 2000 was in a trio with bassist Jay Anderson and drummer Billy Drummond on the Criss Cross label the album Workin 'Out.
