John Canaparius

John Canaparius was a Benedictine monk and abbot of a monastery Sti. Boniface et Alexius on the Aventine Hill in Rome. It traditionally ascribes to him the Vita sancti adalberti episcopi Pragensis, the life of Saint Adalbert of Prague ( built around 1000). In this work, for the first time is mentioned the city of Gdansk, under the name " urbem Gyddanzyc ".

Johannes Fried has denied the authorship of Canaparius and instead brought Bishop Notger of Liege as an author into play. This is also the oldest manuscript, recently rediscovered in Aachen.

The German Chaplains Nicholas of Jeroschin translated the Vita in the 14th century into German.
