John Carney (director)

John Carney (born 1972 in Dublin) is an Irish film director and screenwriter. He is best known as the director of the film Once.

Life

Carney began his career in 1991 as a cultural bassist of the Irish rock band The Frames, with whom he played until 1993 and for which he also directed some video clips. In 2001 he directed was involved in the screenplay of the film On the Edge with Stephen Rea and Cillian Murphy. In 2003, he then wrote the screenplay and directed (both with his brother Kieran Carney and Jerry Hall ) in the very successful Irish TV series Bachelors Walk.

In 2006 he directed the film Once, in the play of his former band singer Glen Hansard and Czech musician Markéta Irglová. The film was awarded after its premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh at the Sundance Film Festival 2007 in the drama category with the World Cinema Audience Award.
