Action
The protagonist lives again with his widowed father in Dublin and repaired in the electrical appliances shop vacuum cleaner. He also works with his verschrammelten guitar as a street musician and dreams of a career as a professional musician. A young Czech immigrant who as a flower seller works in Dublin on the road and is later hired by a rich family as a cleaning woman, befriends him and encourages him soon afterwards to put his dreams into reality.
After him, the trained pianist has captivated in a lunch break with their game, the two discover on the common enthusiasm for the music of time, more and more sympathy for each other, but can not erase the traces of their past. While he handles a painful separation in his songs, it has a nearly two- year-old daughter with her husband, who has remained in the Czech Republic. During the day, their drawn with her to Ireland mother cares for the child of the estranged couple.
With a motley band road they take in a Dublin studio on a demo CD. The soundtrack was recorded and sung by the two main actors Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. The film music was composed for the most part of Hansard, Irglová also contributed two songs at. Another two songs they wrote together. Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova were honored in 2008 for the song " Falling Slowly " won an Oscar for Best Song and was nominated for a Grammy in the same year.

The two main actors took home after the completion of filming a relationship. The age difference between the two is 18.
Lead actor Glen Hansard is the lead singer and guitarist of the band The Frames, director John Carney was there until 1993 bassist. Hansard played the Outspan Foster in the musical film The Commitments.
The film was almost turned into dogma - style in 17 days (up to a crane - rigging ) with hand-held camera on location and in the homes of various crew members. The budget amounted to ( 160,000 U.S. dollars) only 130,000 euros because of this economical production. Funding in the amount of 100,000 euros they received from the Irish Film Board.
Once had on 15 July 2006 to a festival in Ireland premiere. After he was rejected by all European film festival juries, he won at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival surprising the audience award.
The film opened in the United States with only two copies and there was still a financial success.

A prequel to the movie
Director John Carney had to make the plan a film about a street musician. For this purpose he asked his friend Glen Hansard to write some songs that he could use in the film. Hansard and Carney played a few years earlier together in the band " The Frames ". Hansard Carney made known with Marketa Irglova which the profile property - East European and musician - corresponded. Carney was soon convinced to give her the role of the protagonist. The search for the male lead was marked by some decisions. Carney had a choice to commit a very good actor who could sing an average, or a very good singer who was average in the spectacle. He opted for the latter more, because the focus of the story was clearly put on the music.
When he finally saw how Hansard and Irglova interacted with each other, it was clear for him to commit Hansard for the lead role.
