John Cheever Cowdin

John Cheever Cowdin (often: J. Cheever Cowdin, * 1889, † September 16, 1960 in New York City ) was an American financier, in addition to numerous other companies, inter alia, the New York Standard Capital Corporation and the Ideal Chemicals board.

Life

Cowdin was the third child of a wealthy merchant John Elliot Cowdin and Gertrude Cheever. He left the Preparatory School at the age of 18 without subsequent studies to work as a banker at JP Morgan & Co.. In the 1920s, he made a name for himself as a polo player. In the early 1930s, he was, together with George Newell Armsby, as one of the leading financiers of the American aviation.

Cowdins Standard Capital was part of the finance group, which won in 1936 control of the until then by Carl Laemmle -run film production company Universal Studios. There Cowdin was until 1949 Chairman of the Board of Directors. In this role, he provided, inter alia, Elizabeth Taylor her first film role ( 1941).

Since 1929, Cowdin was with Katherine McCutcheon, and later married to Andrea Cowdin.
