John Daly (bishop)

Rt Rev John Charles Sydney Daly (* 1901, † 1985) was an Anglican bishop in Africa and Asia.

Life

After his education at Gresham 's School, Holt and the University of Cambridge Daly became a deacon of the Church of England in 1923 and received his ordination. As the youngest bishop, he was sent in 1935 by the newly created Diocese of Gambia and the Rio Pongas. During the Second World War, Daly served as District Scout Commissioner, so he headed in 1944 the Gambian contingent on a Jamboree in Katibougou in the former French Sudan (now Mali), which was organized for Francophone and Anglophone Boy Scouts.

In 1951 he was sent to the Diocese of Accra (Ghana ) was added, which he directed until 1955, when he was sent to the diocese of Korea. The mission was a more challenging for him because after the Korean War (1950-1953), and the elimination of most contacts with North Korea, the country had to overcome economic, political and social problems. It was introduced in the Anglican Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Nicholas solemnly in his office on 17 January 1956.

The diocese of Korea was divided in 1965, Paul Ch'on Li -Hwan (Paul Lee, the first Korean bishop of the Anglican Church in Korea) was bishop of the Diocese of Seoul. Daly was bishop of the Diocese of Daejeon, an office he held until 1968.

Daly saw the 50-year anniversary as a bishop. The " Bishop John Daly Mission Center" in Gumi (South Korea) was named after him.
