John David Jackson (Boxer)

John David Jackson ( born May 17, 1963 in Denver, Colorado ) is a retired American professional boxer. He was WBO world champion in the light middleweight and WBA world champion at middleweight.

Boxing career

As an amateur, he trained in Tacoma and in 1981 became U.S. vice- champion in the light middleweight division. For the Olympic Games in 1980, he had been unable to qualify because he was defeated in the national selection against the reigning U.S. champion Gene Hatcher ( later WBA champion ).

In 1984 he turned professional and remained unbeaten for more than ten years. On January 13, 1987, he was with a TKO victory over Sidney Outlaw, Master of Pennsylvania in the light middleweight. On December 8, 1988, he won with a premature victory over Lupe Aquino ( 33-4 ), the WBO World Championship light middleweight and was at the same time first WBO titlist this weight class. After an early title defense against Steve Little ( later WBA champion at super middleweight ), he punched in February 1990 against Martin Camara. The fight ended after the eleventh round wertungslos ( no contest ) since Camara refused to box the twelfth round. This was due to a mistake of the referee, who accidentally after a supposed precipitation Jackson ended the fight prematurely and Camara now felt cheated out of a victory.

On October 23, 1990 Jackson defended his title by unanimous decision against the British Chris Pyatt ( 30-2 ), and on July 21, 1991 also unanimously against Tyrone Trice ( 38-3 ). In June 1992, he won early against Pat Lawlor (18-1 ), and in December on points against Sergio Medina ( 35-6 ). In his sixth and final defense of the title on December 19, 1992, he defeated Michele Mastrodonato (17-1 ) by TKO in the tenth round.

On 1 October 1993 he won in Buenos Aires with a unanimous points win over Reggie Johnson ( 34-2 ), the WBA middleweight championship. But already in the first title defense on December 10, 1994 against Jorge Fernando Castro ( 95-4 ), Jackson lost prematurely by TKO in the ninth round. Also in the fight for the IBF World Championship on April 19, 1997 against Bernard Hopkins ( 30-2 ), Jackson defeated prematurely in the sixth round. Even the rematch against Jorge Fernando Castro in February 1998 after he lost points.

After a knockout win against Dave Boone in September 1999, he ended his career.
