Jorge Castro (boxer)
Jorge Fernando Castro ( born August 18, 1967 in Caleta Olivia ) is a former Argentine professional boxer and former world champion of the WBA middleweight.
Boxing career
Jorge Fernando Castro 1987 Professional and remained unbeaten in his first 39 fights. Here he managed a points victory over ten rounds against world title challenger Lorenzo Luis Garcia ( 71-7 ). In the rematch four months later Castro suffered his first defeat when he lost on points over ten rounds. After 14 more victories, including against Miguel Ángel Arroyo ( 46-5 ), he suffered in October 1990 another defeat against Héctor Hugo Vilte ( 45-7 ).
On October 14, 1990, he was a knockout win in the twelfth round against Hugo Raul Marin Angeli ( 35-6 ), South American champion in the light middleweight and defended the title among other things, by whacked in the first round again against Miguel Ángel Arroyo ( 52-7 ). In April 1991, he also won early against Mario Alberto Gastón Chávez ( 27-1 ).
On 13 December 1991 he was in Paris a world title opportunity the WBC light middleweight against Terry Norris, but lost on points over twelve rounds. On June 30, 1992, he was defeated on points also the world champion Roy Jones junior. However, he won his next 23 fights in a row, 15 of them prematurely. Here he succeeded in two new victories against Lorenzo Luis Garcia and this time also a victory against Héctor Hugo Vilte.
On August 12, 1994, he won by a points win over Reggie Johnson ( 35-3 ), the vacant WBA middleweight championship. In November 1994, he defended the title by Ko in the second round against Alex Ramos ( 39-9 ). In his second defense on 10 December 1994, he won by KO in the ninth round against John Jackson ( 32-0 ) also was the fight of the Ring Magazine's "Fight of the Year". Even against Anthony Andrews ( 23-8 ) he could defend his title in May 1995 by Ko defend in the twelfth round. On October 13, 1995 he faced in a rematch Reggie Johnson and again won on points. On 19 December 1995 he lost the WBA belt in Tokyo by a point defeat to the Japanese Shinji Takehara ( 23-0 ).
On February 15, 1997, he won by unanimous decision against Roberto Durán, but this was defeated in the rematch. In January 1998, he was with a knockout win against Rogerio Lobo (13-1 ), Latin American champion of WBA super middleweight and then struck again, among others, John Jackson, and Juan Carlos Giménez ( 51-9 ) and Fabián Alberto Chancalay ( 43 - 6). On December 16, 2000, he punched in the Essen Grugahalle against Juan Carlos Gomez ( 31-0 ) for the WBC World Cruiserweight Championship, but lost for the first time in his career early in the tenth round.
Subsequent victories over Roberto Coelho ( 29-5 ), Peter Venâncio ( 38-4 ) and imamu Mayfield ( 21-3 ), he received on 1 February 2002 in Arizona a world title chance of IBF cruiserweight against Vasily Shirov (30 -0 ), but this was defeated on points. On 12 July 2003, he lost the fight for the IBO World Cruiserweight Championship against the South Africans Sebastiaan Rothmann (16-1 ).
In December 2003 he again won the South American Championship, and in January 2005 the Latin American championship belt the WBA. His last professional fight, he denied on January 27, 2007, compared José Luis Herrera ( 14-2 ) and won by KO in the second round.
