John Denham (poet)

Sir John Denham ( * 1615 in Dublin, † March 10, 1669 in London) was an Irish writer.

Life

Denham was the son of Sir John Denham Elder. and his wife Eleanor. After attending a grammar school Denham studied at Trinity College, Oxford. After successfully completing his studies, he was immediately admitted to the bar.

On June 25, 1634 Denham married his wife Ann. In the civil war Denham defended as an ardent Royalist Farnham Castle. In the years 1650 to 1652 to Denham held on in the Netherlands.

After his return he settled in Bury, Surrey, where on May 25, In 1665 he married Margaret after the death of his wife Ann.

With his poem, Cooper 's Hill, explores the landscape of the river Thames in the Denham was the topographical poem introduced into the English literature.

At the age of 54 years Sir John Denham died on March 10, 1669 in London.
