John Derbyshire (swimmer)

John Henry " Rob" Derbyshire ( born November 29, 1878 in Manchester, † 30 July 1938 in Baslow ) was a British swimmer and water polo player.

Derbyshire won 1898-1904 a total of ten individual competitions of the Amateur Swimming Association in England, including six victories at 100 yards freestyle competitions. In 1907 he was the first Briton who swam this distance in less than a minute. He took part in the Olympic Games in 1900 in Paris, where he won the gold medal in water polo, which was previously not viewed as swimming. At the 1906 Summer Olympics in Athens, he took part with the 4 x 250 m freestyle relay and won the bronze medal. With the 4x 200m freestyle relay he won two years later at the next regular games in London the gold medal. He took again in 1912 in Stockholm at the 100 m freestyle contest, but could not reach the final.

Derbyshire was working full time as a lifeguard.
