John Fisher (politician)

John Fisher ( born March 13, 1806 Londonderry, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, † March 28, 1882 in Batavia, New York ) was an American politician. Between 1869 and 1871 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Fisher attended the common schools and worked in the trade. Between 1836 and 1856 he led an iron melt in Hamilton ( Canada). In this city he was in Ontario in 1848 and 1849 Member of the Municipal Council in 1850 and mayor in years. Since 1856 he lived in Batavia, New York. From 1866 to 1868 he was State Representative for the establishment of an institute for the blind in Batavia. He also led a fire insurance company. Politically, he joined the Republican Party.

In the congressional elections of 1868 Fisher was the 29th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Burt Van Horn on March 4, 1869. Since he has not been confirmed in 1870, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1871. During this time the 15th Amendment was ratified.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives John Fisher worked again in the fire insurance industry. He died on March 28, 1882 in Batavia, where he was also buried.
