John G. Dow

John Goodchild Dow ( born May 6, 1905 in New York City; † March 11, 2003 in Suffern, New York ) was an American politician. Between 1965 and 1969, and 1971-1973 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Goodchild Dow attended public schools in Canton ( Massachusetts). He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1927 from Harvard College in Cambridge, and his Master of Arts degree in 1937 at Columbia University in New York City. Between 1929 and 1964 he worked as a systems analyst for major corporations. He was also the 1950-1964 Director of Civil Defense in Grandview. In 1964 he was the chair of the Zoning Board of Appeals in Grandview. He ran unsuccessfully in 1954 and 1956 for a seat in the New York State Legislature.

Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party. In the congressional elections of 1964 for the 89th Congress Dow was in the 27th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Katharine St. George on January 4, 1965. He was re-elected once. In his renewed candidacy in 1968, he was defeated and then resigned after 3 January 1969 the Congress of. During his time he took Congress in 1968 as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in part. He was Staff Assistant in Congress. In 1970 he ran for the 92nd Congress. After a successful election, he entered on January 4, 1971, to succeed Martin B. McKneally. He suffered in his renewed candidacy in 1972 a defeat and then retired after January 3, 1973, the Congress of. His candidacy in 1974 was also unsuccessful.

After his time, he was Congress 1976-1982 Deputy Director in the New York State Comprehensive Employment Training Act Program. During this time he founded in 1980 Americans Against Nuclear War. In 1982, he ran unsuccessfully for the nomination for the 98th Congress. He died on 11 March 2003 in Suffern.
