John Gardner (lawyer)

John Gardner ( born March 23, 1965) is a British philosopher of law. Since 2000 he is Professor of Philosophy of Law ( Jurisprudence ) at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of University College, Oxford.

Gardner grew up in Glasgow and studied law at New College, Oxford. In 1995 he earned his doctorate with the degree of D.Phil .. From 1991 to 1996 he was a lecturer at the Law Faculty of the University of Oxford; 1996 to 2000 he taught at King's College London.

Gardner was visiting professor at Columbia Law School ( 2000), Yale University ( Georges- Lurcy Visiting Professor 2002-03, 2005) and the Law Faculty of the University of Texas at Austin (2006).

He publishes in the field of legal philosophy and legal theory, ethics and the philosophical foundations of tort law and criminal law and is co-editor of various magazines. Although his works are respected in the English-speaking world by 2011, article in German language is first published.
