John Gilbert, Baron Gilbert

John William Gilbert, Baron Gilbert (PC, FRGS; * April 5, 1927, † June 2, 2013 ) was a British politician ( Labour Party ) and member of the House of Lords.

Life

His education was Gilbert at the Merchant Taylors ' School, before studying economics at St. John 's College and at New York University. He also worked as a chartered accountant ( Chartered accountant ) in Canada. At the general election in 1966, he took up for the Labour Party in the constituency Ludlow, but could not win a seat in the lower house. From 1970 to 1974 he was the Labour Party Member of the House of Commons for the electoral district of Dudley, then to 1997 for the constituency Dudley East. 1974/75 he was Financial Secretary of State and then followed until 1976 Transport Minister under Harold Wilson. In the cabinet of James Callaghan, he served as Minister of State for Defence. He was during his time in the House on various committees, including 1979-1987 and the Defence Committee from 1994 to 1997 the Intelligence Committee.

In 1978 he was elected a member of the Privy Council, 1983 Wake Forest University awarded him the honorary LLD the. Since 1997, Gilbert was as a life peer with the title Baron Gilbert of Dudley in the County of West Midlands in the House of Lords, and the same year he became Minister of State for procurement logistics in the Department of Defense (until 1999). He was a member of Amnesty International, Fabian Society and the WWF.
