John Gore (Royal Navy captain)

John Gore (* 1729 or 1730 in Middlesex County, Virginia; † September 10, 1790 in Greenwich ) was a British-American sailor who mitsegelte for the British Royal Navy on the HMS Dolphin under John Byron and Samuel Wallis.

Life

Gore accompanied James Cook on the first and third expedition. He also took ultimately the command of the third expedition to James Cook and Charles Clerke death. In 1771 he commanded the ship of the botanist Joseph Banks on a trip to Iceland and the Hebrides. Although he was promoted after his return on October 3, 1780 to: Post Captain, he remained henceforth in Greenwich on the old site of James Cook at Greenwich Hospital, where he died in 1790.

Gore 's son, John Gore, 1795 was a lieutenant in the Royal Navy.

Honors

After John Gore Gore Gore Point and the Peninsula were (Gore Peninsula ) designated by the Captain Nathaniel Portlock in Alaskan Kenai Fjords National Park. Portlock was a close friend whose family he already knew from Virginia and explored the Pacific coast of America north-west in the 18th century.
