John H. Plumb

Sir John "Jack" Harold Plumb FBA ( born August 20, 1911 in Leicester, England; † 21 October 2001 in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England ) was a British historian and author of numerous textbooks written especially about the history of Great Britain.

Life

After visiting the Alderman Newton 's Grammar School, he studied at University College, Leicester and then at Christ 's College, University of Cambridge. After finishing his studies, he was initially 1939-1946 Scholar ( Scholar ) at King's College, University of Cambridge, before returning 1946-1966 as a lecturer at Christ's College. During this time he was in 1961 also trustee ( Trustee ) of the National Portrait Gallery in London and held this position until 1982.

In 1966 he accepted an appointment as professor of Modern History at Christ 's College, and taught at this until his retirement in 1973. 1978 he became the successor of Alexander Robertus Todd Rector (master ) of Christ's College, and held that office through up to his replacement Hans Leo Kornberg in 1982.

After he became in 1968 a member ( Fellow ) of the British Academy and in 1970 a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, took place in 1982 his elevation to knighthood ( Knighthood ), so that henceforth he the additional name "Sir" led. In addition, he was appointed by Leonard Wolfson, Baron Wolfson as a member of the Trusteeship Council, founded by this Wolfson Foundation.

In addition to his decades of teaching activities published Plumb numerous technical books that deal. Particularly the history of Britain and with politicians such as Robert Walpole and the British monarch as George I, George II, George III, George IV and Queen Elizabeth II concerned and partly in the German language were translated.
