John Hus is an American feature film from the year 1977, as Rod Colbin the Präreformator Jan Hus plays.

Action

Approximately 100 years before Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses, live the theologian Jan Hus, who also wants to obtain a reversal of the Church's practice in Bohemia. Growing up in the country, he went as a teenager to Prague, where he studied and was in connection to the study of priests. Meanwhile, he has become a professor and rector of the University of Prague.

Hu is widely recognized with the writings of John Wyclif in contact and begins to express präreformatorische thoughts. King Sigismund, who Hus very underestimated is not averse to the idea, but can already see a resistance ahead and warned Hus therefore personally. Hus should be operating not overdo it, because the status quo should be maintained. But Hu does not listen to him. His congregation, he preaches in the Czech language, because he wants people really understand the Scriptures. He preaches that God's mercy and salvation can not be bought. Faith leads to forgiveness of sins, and not works. But not everyone is thrilled with his sermons. The official church became aware of him and are, therefore, the statement that all the churches of Prague have to remain closed. Services can therefore no longer be maintained. Many Prague are horrified, they feel cut off from God. Hus on Prague leaves and goes back to the country, in the area in which he grew up.

One day Hus receives news of his friend King Sigismund. In Constance, a council to be held. Hus may come to defend his teachings there. Sigismund assured him a safe-conduct for the outward and return journey. Hus will take the opportunity to speak before the council to convince the official church of his faith. Knowing that this project, despite the insured protection by King Sigismund, is dangerous, he begins his journey. But most of the council he wants to go even Cardinal Antonio and convince him. But his conversation with that does not run successfully. Cardinal Antonio holds lessons for heresies and Hus Hus himself as a dangerous heretic. At once he can imprison Hus. Soon afterwards, Sigismund, Cardinal Antonio calls to himself. Hus, was a successful preacher who attracts the people, the king. In a conversation that takes place in private replies Cardinal Antonio that 23 items were formulated to demonstrate what that Hus mistaken. Antonio explained that when Sigismund would protect a convicted heretic, he would be the devil and will feel the consequences. A sentence of excommunication would follow. Sigismund is intimidated and silent.

The prisoner Hus is provided by Cardinal Antonio before the election to the next council to submit so to Revoke and hope that you can spare him or his teachings continue to represent, with the corresponding consequences. Hus does not retract and the contracting process begins before the council against him. King Sigismund indeed present, looks to be shaken and idly. Hus is forbidden to talk, you have no interest in that he defends himself. It is declared that Hus was a follower of Wyclif, and immediately he is considered by the decision makers as heretics. Cardinal Antonio reads the following judgment. Hus and his books to be burned.

Jan Hus appears shocked and complains loudly to Antonio immediately. He had his books, his life's work never read, how could he judge that they are burned. But the process is over. Hus is publicly taken his chasuble in port. His priestly dignity is thus likewise be eliminated. From Cardinal Antonio Hus is placed a cap, which is to characterize him as a heretic. Next, he is brought to the place of execution. There he is again asked whether he would recant. But Hu does not revoke now. He trusts in God. Singing by the grace of God he is burned at the stake. Cardinal Antonio, King Sigismund and the people look to it.

The production company of the film was Faith for Today. For the film, there is an English, a French, a Portuguese, and Spanish subtitles. In addition to the English soundtrack probably exist also a French, Portuguese and a Spanish synchronization.
