John I of Trebizond

John I Komnenos Axuch († 1238 ) was from 1235 to 1238 and Emperor of Trebizond Großkomnene.

Life

John was the elder son of Alexios I, the first emperor of Trebizond, and his wife Theodora Axuchina. In 1235 he followed his brother Andronikos I. to the throne.

The period of his reign was short and essentially uneventful. This ended abruptly in 1238 when he was killed while participating in a time under nobles very popular game of polo. After his death, his son and heir Johan Nikos was forcibly taken to a monastery. Instead of his boarded John's brother Manuel I to the throne. This was the second time since the foundation of the state of the son of a deceased ruler in favor of other relatives passed over for the succession. For the first time this happened in 1222, when Andronikos I., the son Alexius I., this was followed on the throne. However, some sources may indicate that Johan Nikos his father inherited, at least briefly, before he was deposed and sent to the monastery.
