John L. Murray

John Loyola Murray ( born 1943 in Limerick, County Limerick ) is an Irish judge, two-time Attorney General ( Attorney General of Ireland ), longtime judge at the European Court of Justice: He was from 2004 to 2011 Chief Justice of Ireland Chief Justice of the Supreme Court

Life

After visiting the Crescent College and the Rockwell College, he studied law at University College Dublin and the King's Inns. During his studies, was an active member of the student council, and was twice elected President of the Union of Students in Ireland. After his legal admission 1967, he worked as a lawyer and in 1981 was working with the appeal to the Inner Bar as Senior Counsel.

In August 1982, he was the first Attorney General of Ireland, although he held this office only until December 1982. Then he again took up his private career as a lawyer before he again to September 1991 was Attorney General of March 1987.

Upon completion of this activity, he was appointed in 1991 as a judge to the European Court of Justice (ECJ ) and remained there until 1999. During this time he was also from 1994 to 2002 Visiting Professor at the Summer School of Georgetown University, at the Ruprecht -Karls- University of Heidelberg and the University of Florence. In addition, he was between 1997 and 2000 Visiting Professor of European Law at the Université catholique de Louvain in 1998 and a visiting professor of human rights at the University of Aix -Marseille.

After completing his work as a judge at the European Court of Justice, he was appointed judge of the Supreme Court in 1999. During this activity, he was between 2000 and 2003 and Chairman of the Anti- Fraud Committee of the European Central Bank ( ECB).

From 23 July 2004 to 2011 was John L. Murray Chief Justice of Ireland, and thus Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Due to this, he was under the Constitution of Ireland is also a member of the State Council ( Comhairle Stait ) and the Presidential Commission ( Coimisiún na hUachtaránachta ). In addition, he was from 2004 to 2007 Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee of the European Commission on Ethics.

For his achievements he has won several awards and received 2003 awarded an honorary doctorate of law in addition to the Grand Cross of Merit of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg from the University of Limerick in 1993, and from New England School of Law in Boston.
