John Leveson-Gower, 1st Baron Gower

John Leveson - Gower, 1st Baron Gower PC ( born January 7, 1675 Stittenham, Yorkshire, † August 31 1709 in Belvoir Castle, Grantham, Lincolnshire ) was a British politician. He was the son of Sir William Leveson - Gower, 4th Baronet and his wife Jane Granville. His maternal grandparents were John Granville, 1st Earl of Bath, and his wife Jane Wyche, a daughter of Sir Peter Wyche.

Career

John Leveson - Gower was from 1692 to 1703 Member of the House of Commons for the Tories in the constituency Newcastle -under- Lyne. He was raised on 16 March 1703 Baron Gower of Sittenham in the County of York in the peerage, which a seat in the House of Lords was connected. He was from 1702 to 1707 a member of the Privy Council, and from 1702 to 1706 Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster in 1706 and Commissioner of the Union.

Family

He married in September 1692 Lady Catherine Manners ( 1675-1722 ), a daughter of John Manners, 1st Duke of Rutland, and had with her six children:

  • John Leveson - Gower, 1st Earl Gower ( 1694-1754 ) first marriage with Lady Evelyn Pierrepont, daughter of Evelyn Pierrepont, 1st Duke of Kingston -upon -Hull; married his second wife, Penelope Stonhouse, daughter of Sir John Stonhouse, 7th Baronet; and his third wife married to Lady Mary Tufton, daughter of Thomas Tufton, 6th Earl of Thanet.
  • William Leveson - Gower († 1756 ), 1720-1754 MP for Staffordshire married to Anne Grosvenor, daughter of Sir Thomas Grosvenor.
  • Thomas Leveson Gower ( born May 6, 1699 Trentham, Staffordshire, † August 12 1727 in London), unmarried, from 1720 until his death in MP for Newcastle -under- Lyme.
  • Baptist Leveson - Gower (* 1701, † August 4, 1782 ), unmarried, 1727-1761 MP for Newcastle -under- Lyme.
  • Katherine Leveson - Gower († April 20, 1712 in London, buried on 1 May 1712 Lilleshall ).
  • Jane Leveson - Gower (c. 1704 † June 10, 1726 ), married on January 5, 1718 or 1719 with John Proby († 1760).
