John Leveson-Gower, 1st Earl Gower

John Leveson - Gower, 1st Earl Gower PC ( * August 10, 1694, † December 25, 1754 ) was a British politician of the Tories, and the first Tory who entered the government in the 18th century. There he was Lord Privy Seal.

He was a son of John Leveson - Gower and his wife Catherine Manners. Married for the first time he was with Lady Evelyn Pierrepont. It is unclear whether the wedding on March 13, 1711 or 1712 took place.

Together they had seven children:

  • Gertrude Leveson - Gower ( 1714/1715-1794 ). She married John Russell, 4th Duke of Bedford.
  • Mary Leveson - Gower ( 1717-1778 ). She married Sir Richard Wrottesley, Bart.
  • Frances Leveson - Gower ( 1720-1788 ). She married Lord John Philip Sackville, a younger son of Lionel Sackville, 1st Duke of Dorset. They were the parents of John Sackville, 3rd Duke of Dorset.
  • Granville Leveson - Gower, 1st Marquess of Stafford ( 1721-1803 ).
  • Elizabeth Leveson - Gower ( 1723/1724-1784 ). She married John Waldegrave, 3rd Earl Waldegrave.
  • Evelyn Leveson - Gower ( 1724/1725-1763 ). She married John Fitzpatrick, 1st Earl of Upper Ossory.
  • Richard Leveson - Gower ( 1726-1753 ). He became a member of the House of Commons.

Evelyn died on 26 June 1727 Gower was a widower. On October 31, 1733 he married Penelope Stenhouse, a daughter of Sir John Stenhouse.

His second wife died on 19 August 1734th On May 16, 1736 he married Mary Tufton, daughter of Thomas Tufton, 6th Earl of Thanet. Together they had one son:

  • John Leveson - Gower ( 1740-1792 ). He married Frances Boscawen, a daughter of Edward Boscawen. He joined the Royal Navy and became admiral.
