John M. Murphy

John Michael Murphy ( born August 3, 1926 in Staten Iceland, New York) is an American soldier and politician. Between 1963 and 1981 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Michael Murphy was born about eight years after the end of World War I in Staten Iceland in Richmond County. He attended public schools in New York City, the La Salle Military Academy in Oakdale, the College in Amherst (Massachusetts ) and the United States Military Academy at West Point. During the Second World War he undertook in August 1944 as a private in the army. He was promoted to Corporal in September 1944 and in May 1945 received a commission to Second Lieutenant. In July 1946 he was appointed to West Point, where he graduated in June 1950. He went to Korea, where he served as platoon leader ( platoon leader), company commander and intelligence officer ( intelligence officer ) served in the 9th Infantry Regiment. He was promoted in October 1950 to the First Lieutenant and Captain in October 1953, retired in July 1956 from the Army. He was awarded with V and oak leaves the Distinguished Service Cross and the Bronze Star. Between 1956 and 1962 he worked as a managing director and contract carrier in Staten Iceland. He was president of the Cleveland General Transport Co., Inc.

As a delegate, he took in the years 1964, 1968 and 1976 to the Democratic National Conventions in 1967 and part of the Constituent Assembly of New York. In the congressional elections of 1962 for the 88th Congress Murphy was in the 16th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Adam Clayton Powell Jr. on January 4, 1963. He was re-elected four times in a row. In 1972, he was elected in the 17th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he became the successor of Ed Koch on January 4, 1973. He was re-elected three times in a row. In 1980 he suffered in his renewed candidacy defeat and retired after January 3, 1981 from the Congress of. As a Congressman he had presided over the Select Committee on the Outer Continental Shelf (Ad Hoc) ( 94th to 96th Congress ) and the Committee on Merchant Marine and Fisheries ( 95th and 96th Congress ).

After his conference time he was active as an investor and developer of biotechnology and high technology companies. He lives in Staten Iceland.
