John Mulagada

John Mulagada ( born December 12, 1937 in Parripadu, Andhra Pradesh, India, † August 16 2009 in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, India) was Bishop of Eluru.

Life

John Mulagada studied at the Seminary of St. John's in Hyderabad and received on 4 January 1965, the ordination.

Pope Paul VI. ordered him in 1976 the first bishop of the newly established Diocese of Eluru, a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Visakhapatnam. He received his episcopal consecration on 5 May 1977, the former Archbishop of Bangalore and later Cardinal Duraisamy Simon Lourdusamy, secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples; Co-consecrators were Saminini Arulappa, Archbishop of Hyderabad, and Ignatius Gopu MSFS, Bishop of Visakhapatnam.

He was the first bishop of the Roman Catholic Church in India, who belonged to the caste of the Dalit ( " untouchables "). He sat down for a particular social justice and access to educational institutions of the caste of " untouchables ". He has been described as the first Telugu bishop.

John Mulagada died after a short illness in office. The funeral on August 19, 2009 in St. Xavier's Grounds in Eluru, which was held by Mariadas Kagithapu MSFS, Archbishop of Visakhapatnam, and Marampudi Joji, Archbishop of Hyderabad, attended more than 20,000 believers, including 700 priests and 1,500 nuns.
