Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Visakhapatnam
The Archdiocese of Visakhapatnam (Latin: Archidioecesis Visakhapatnamensis ) is a located in India Roman Catholic archdiocese based in Visakhapatnam.
History
The Archdiocese of Visakhapatnam was born on April 3, 1850 by Pope Pius IX. from the Apostolic Vicariate of territory Madras established as Apostolic Vicariate Vizagapatam.
On September 1, 1886, the Apostolic Vicariate Vizagapatam was by Pope Leo XIII. charged with the Apostolic Constitution Humanae salutis to the diocese and the Archdiocese of Madras is a suffragan. The diocese Vizagapatam announced on July 11, 1887 from parts of its territory to the founding of the Diocese of Nagpur. A further transfer of territory took place on July 18, 1928 establishing the mission sui juris Cuttack. On 21 October 1950, the diocese was renamed the Diocese Vizagapatam Visakhapatnam. The diocese of Visakhapatnam announced on July 1, 1993 from parts of its territory to the founding of the Diocese of Srikakulam. On 16 October 2001 the diocese of Visakhapatnam was elevated by Pope John Paul II to the archbishopric.
Territory
The Archdiocese of Visakhapatnam comprises the districts of East Godavari and Visakhapatnam as well as parts of the district of Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh.
