Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Bombay

The Archdiocese of Bombay (Latin Archidioecesis Bombayensis ) is a Roman Catholic Archdiocese in India.

History

Forerunner of today's Archdiocese of Bombay is the Apostolic Vicariate in 1637, founded out of the Archdiocese of Goa Idalcan / Deccan / Bijapur, which in 1669 changed its name to Great Mogul. On May 17, 1784 were parts of its territory establishing the mission sui juris from Hindustan. In 1920 it changed its name again in Bombay. On September 1, 1886, this Pope Leo XIII. raised to an archbishopric. On May 20, 1948 Part of the diocesan territory to the newly erected diocese of Karachi Location. In 1949, more parts of the territory of the newly created Diocese of Ahmedabad were assigned. In 1966, a further cession of territory, as the diocese of Baroda was established. On April 30, 1988 Part of the diocesan territory to the newly created diocese of Kalyan Location. The Archdiocese of Bombay was given its present form in 1998 after the transfer of territory to the Diocese of Vasai.
