Oswald Gracias

Cardinal Oswald Gracias ( born December 24, 1944 in Bombay (now Mumbai), India) is Archbishop of Bombay.

Life

Oswald Gracias studied at the seminary of Bombay philosophy and Catholic theology. Gracias received on December 20, 1970 by the Archbishop of Bombay, Cardinal Valerian Gracias, the sacrament of Holy Orders. From 1971 to 1976 he was secretary of the Bishop of Jamshedpur. Then Gracias went for further studies in Canon Law at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome, where he began in 1981 his doctorate with a dissertation on The legal relevance of married love for a valid marital consent in Canon Law.

1982 Oswald Gracias returned back to Bombay and was appointed Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Bombay. Later, he was a visiting professor at the seminary of Bombay.

On June 28, 1997, Pope John Paul II appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Bombay and titular bishop of Bladia. He received his episcopal consecration on 16 September of the same year, the then Archbishop of Bombay and later cardinal and prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, Ivan Dias. Oswald Gracias was appointed by John Paul II, Archbishop of Agra on 7 September 2000.

Archbishop of Bombay

On October 14, 2006 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him. Archbishop of Bombay. The inauguration took place on 14 December of the same year.

24 November 2007 it took Benedict XVI. as cardinal priest with the titular church of San Paolo della Croce a " Corviale " in the College of Cardinals.

Oswald Gracias, together with the Archbishop of Sao Paulo Odilo Pedro Scherer Cardinal and Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Cardinal William Joseph Levada, Pope Benedict XVI. ( 5 to 26 October 2008) appointed as Delegate President of the 12th Synod of Bishops. But he had to cancel because of anti-Christian violence in India.

Oswald Gracias is chairman of the Indian Bishops' Conference CBCI.
