Odilo Scherer
Odilo Pedro Scherer Cardinal, also Dom Odilo, ( born September 21, 1949 in Cerro Largo (Rio Grande do Sul ), Brazil as Otto Scherer ) is a Brazilian priest and reigning Archbishop of São Paulo, the third largest with 5.2 million Catholics Diocese the world.
Family
The German Brazilian Odilo Pedro Scherer was born as one of eleven children of Edwino Scherer and his wife Francisca nee Steffens. His ancestors emigrated in the 1880s from the Saarland Theley.
Scherer is a nephew of Cardinal Alfredo Vicente Scherer.
Life
Education and training
Scherer studied from 1963 to 1969 Catholic theology and philosophy at the seminary Seminário São José in Curitiba. On Seminário Maior Rainha dos Apóstolos in Curitiba, he deepened his philosophical studies and studied from 1970 to 1975 Education at the Universidade de Passo Fundo in Passo Fundo. On December 7, 1976, he received by Archbishop Armando Círio in Quatro Pontes the sacrament of Holy Orders. After completing a graduate theological training at the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná in Curitiba, he completed from 1994 to 1996 a philosophical master studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. As a seminarian at the Pontifical Brazilian Pius College, he completed 1988-1991 doctoral studies for Doctor Theologiae at Rome's Gregorian University.
He completed various training courses, such as the teaching methods teaching at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre, the German language at the Goethe Institute in Staufen im Breisgau, the French language at the University of Lyon and the English language in London.
From 1983 to 1985 he was for a time as a vacation replacement in the parish of the Transfiguration of Christ in Bad Vilbel along with Zeno Have devil and Jacinto mountain man as a student in Rome.
University teacher
Odilo Scherer was rector and professor at the seminary Seminário Diocesan São José in Cascavel (1977-1978), at the diocesan seminary Seminário Diocesan Maria Mãe da Igreja in Toledo (1979-1982, 1993) and at the Centro de Interdiocesano Teologia de Cascavel ( Cintec ) (1991 -1993 ).
Before Scherer 1985 to 1988 worked as a pastor in Toledo, he taught philosophy at the Faculdade de Ciências Humana Arnaldo Busatto ( 1980-1985 ) and Catholic Theology at the Instituto de Filosofia e Teologia Paulo VI ( IFITEPS ) ( 1985). Then he taught until 1994 at the Universidade Federal do Paraná. From 1994 to 2001, Odilo Pedro Scherer Officer in the Congregation for Bishops.
Auxiliary Bishop of São Paulo (2002-2007)
On 28 November 2001, Pope John Paul II appointed auxiliary bishop in São Paulo and titular bishop of Novi. The episcopal ordination on 2 February 2002 gave him the Archbishop of São Paulo, Cláudio Cardinal Hummes; Co-consecrators were Armando Círio OSI, Archbishop Emeritus of Cascavel, and Anuar Battisti, Bishop of Toledo. His episcopal motto is In meam commemorationem. The office of Auxiliary Bishop Odilo Pedro Scherer joined on 9 March 2002.
He was from 2003 to 2007 Secretary General of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference and in 2007 was deputy secretary-general of the Fifth General Conference of the Episcopate of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Archbishop of São Paulo
On 21 March 2007, Odilo Pedro Scherer of Pope Benedict XVI. appointed Archbishop of São Paulo. The enthronement took place on 29 April 2007.
24 November 2007 it took Benedict XVI. as cardinal priest with the titular church of Sant'Andrea al Quirinale in the College of Cardinals.
Cardinal Odilo Scherer, together with the Archbishop of Bombay, Oswald Cardinal Gracias, and the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Cardinal William Joseph Levada, Pope Benedict XVI. ( 5 to 26 October 2008) appointed as Delegate President of the 12th Synod of Bishops.
At the local elections in 2012 in São Paulo Scherer gave as Archbishop of São Paulo together with his auxiliary bishops a 10-point guideline for the choice ( " Nota para orientando voto consciente " ( German: "Guideline for the confident voice " ) ) out.
Odilo Scherer is Grand Prior of the Lieutenancy of the Equestrian Order of the São Paulo Holy grave in Jerusalem.
Work
Odilo Scherer is committed to the social pastoral and represents increasingly public positions on social and religious issues.
Scherer complains a worldwide visual culture without solid, consistent values , full of subjectivism and total relativism of values , particularly in relation to ethical, anthropological and religious values . He speaks of a "culture of total subjectivism ".
He advocates a " economy of communion " that is based on Catholic Social Teaching.
In February 2008, Benedict XVI appointed. Scherer in the cardinal - control committee of the Vatican bank Istituto per le Opere di Religione ( IOR ), which is in a serious crisis for money laundering in the service of the Mafia, blockade of corruption investigations, bribery scandals and secret numbered accounts.
Scherer speaks his native language Portuguese fluent English, Italian and German.
After the resignation announcement by Pope Benedict XVI. he was traded as papabile.
