Alfredo Scherer

Alfredo Vicente Cardinal Scherer ( born February 5, 1903 in Bom Principio as Alfred Vincent Scherer; † 9 March 1996 in Porto Alegre) was Archbishop of Porto Alegre.

Family

The German Brazilian Alfredo Vicente Scherer was a descendant of immigrants from Theley ( now the town Tholey, district of St. Wendel ) in Saarland. His father, the wheelwright Peter Scherer, who was born on April 5, 1857 in Theley, emigrated to Brazil in 1879 in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, where he married in 1881 Anna Oppermann.

Alfredo Vicente Scherer was the 12th child of the family in Bom Principio, in the district ( Brazilian: bairro ) on February 5, 1903 Santa Terezinha born.

His nephew is Odilo Pedro Scherer Cardinal.

Life

Alfredo Vicente Scherer studied in Porto Alegre and Rome, the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology. He received on 3 April 1926, the sacrament of Holy Orders, and then worked for seven years as personal secretary to Dom João Batista Becker, Archbishop of Porto Alegre. João Becker also came from the district of St. Wendel to Brazil. He was (now city of St. Wendel ) was born 1870 in winter creek and wandered as a child with his parents to Brazil.

From 1933 to 1946 he held a number of duties as a parish pastor. In June 1946, he was appointed by Pope Pius XII. auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Porto Alegre and appointed him titular bishop of Hemeria. In December of the same year he was appointed Archbishop of Porto Alegre. The Episcopal ordination on February 23, 1947 He received his Cardinal Carlo Chiarlo. Alfredo Vicente Scherer took part in the years 1962-1965 at the Second Vatican Council. Pope Paul VI. took him on 28 April 1969 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Nostra Signora de La Salette on the College of Cardinals.

Scherer was in January 1980 known worldwide as him kidnapped unknown, robbed and finally let free again. The management of the Archdiocese of Porto Alegre in 1981 he laid for reasons of age. He died on 9 March 1996 in Aparecida and was buried in the Cathedral of Porto Alegre.

In 2003 a memorial was established in his birthplace Bom Principio, in which also the childhood home of Vicente Scherer has been established.
