John Norton (athlete)

John Kelley Norton ( born April 16, 1893 in Santa Clara, California, † December 28, 1979 in New York City ) was an American hurdler, who was successful in the early 1920s. He started for the Stanford University and the Olympic Club San Francisco, was 1.83 m tall and 93 kg.

Norton won three American runner-up over 440 yards hurdles: 1920 behind Frank Loomis, 1921 after August Desch and 1923 behind Ivan Riley. Was stopped, only the winning time.

On June 26, 1920 he exhibited in Pasadena in 54.2 seconds a new world record in the 400m hurdles on. He improved the twelve -year-old record of his compatriot Charles Bacon by eight tenths of a second. At the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp, where he participated together with Frank Loomis, August Desch and Charles Daggs, he lost his world record at Loomis, who won in 54.0 seconds. Norton won four meters in 54.6 seconds behind the silver medal, August Desch won bronze in 54.7 seconds, the Frenchman André Géo fourth in 54.8 seconds. All times other than the winning time was estimated.
