John of Görlitz

John of Görlitz ( born June 22, 1370 Prague, † March 1, 1396 in Neuzelle monastery) was the only duke of Görlitz.

Life

Johann was born as the third child in the fourth marriage of Charles IV and Elisabeth of Pomerania and received at the age of three years, the title of Margrave of Moravia and a Margrave of Brandenburg awarded.

1377 Charles IV built for John, his youngest surviving son, of the bailiwick of Görlitz in Upper Lusatia, a Duchy, which belonged also eastern areas of Lower Lusatia and the southern part of the Neumark. Between 1386 and 1388 John was also manager of the Duchy of Luxembourg.

On February 10, 1388 John married in Prague Richardis of Mecklenburg -Schwerin († 1400), daughter of Duke Albrecht III. The only daughter of John and Richardis was Elisabeth, Duchess of Gorlitz and Luxembourg (1390-1451), the 1409 first marriage with Antoine of Burgundy, Duke of Brabant ( 1384-1415 ) and after his death, from 1418 onwards, with Johann III. was married from Bavaria.

Johann issued during his reign immediately after the Prague Jewish pogroms in 1389 a mandate that allowed the expulsion of the Jews from Görlitz, and Jewish privilege in contrast to 1383 the local governor Beneš of Dubé for the country Budissin ( Bautzen ) was issued. His chancellor and closest confidant was the archbishop of Prague Olbram of Škvorec during the entire reign.

John died at the age of only 26 years, probably by poison, in Neuzelle monastery. The areas of his duchy fell back to the old borders of 1377.
