John Paul Wild

John Paul Wild ( born May 17, 1923 in Sheffield, † May 10, 2008 in Canberra ), also called Paul Wild, was a born in the UK Australian astronomer and science managers. He was a pioneer of radio astronomy.

Wild received his academic training in mathematics and physics at the University of Cambridge. During World War II he was the radar officer in the British Navy. In 1947 he joined the Australian research organization CSIRO, where he rose to become head of the Department of Radiation Physics ( 1971-1977 ) and Chairman of the CSIRO ( 1978-1985 ). His scientific interests of radio astronomy and solar physics. He was among the first to introduce the new radio technology systematically used on the interplanetary medium to study the sun and its influence after the Second World War. From 1967 to 1970 he headed the Commission for Radio Astronomy of the International Astronomical Union.
