John Piper (theologian)

John Stephen Piper ( born January 11, 1946 in Chattanooga ) is an American theologian, Baptist clergyman and author.

Life

Piper was born in the U.S. state of Tennessee. He studied from 1964 to 1968 Romance Literature at Wheaton College ( BA) in Illinois and theology at Fuller Theological Seminary ( BD) in Pasadena, California. In 1974 he was at Leonhard Goppelt at the Ludwig- Maximilians- University of Munich with a thesis on " Love your enemies". Jesus love command in the synoptics and in the early Christian paraenesis, a history of the tradition and interpretation of its uses for Dr. theol. doctorate. He then taught at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minnesota. He is since 1980 pastor at Bethlehem Baptist Church and Chancellor and Professor of Practical Theology and Biblical exegesis at Bethlehem College and Seminary in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Piper is married and has five children.
