John Sanford (1803)

John Sanford ( born June 3, 1803 in Roxbury, Connecticut, † October 4, 1857 in Amsterdam, New York ) was an American politician. Between 1841 and 1843 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Sanford was born in the beginning of the 19th century in Roxbury and grew up there. During this time he received a good education. In 1821 he moved to Amsterdam in Montgomery County. Sanford taught at schools in Amsterdam and later in Mayfield, where he pursued and commercial transactions. He returned to Amsterdam and pursued until 1840 on commercial transactions. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party.

In the congressional elections of 1840 for the 27th Congress, he was in the 15th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Peter Joseph Wagner on March 4, 1841. He retired after the March 3, 1843 out of the Congress.

After his conference he founded a carpet factory in New York, but the factory was destroyed by fire in 1849. After he retired from active business life. On October 4, 1857, he died in Amsterdam and was then buried in the Green Hill Cemetery.

Family

He was the son of Sarah Curtis (1771-1856) and Stephen Sanford I. ( 1769-1848 ). His brother, Nehemiah Curtis Sanford (1792-1841), the father of Henry Shelton Sanford (1823-1891) was that the U.S. ambassador to Belgium and was founded the city of Sanford ( Florida). John Sanford married on August 3, 1822 Mary Slack ( 1803-1888 ), daughter of Rachel Winche and John Slack, in their hometown of Amsterdam. The couple had six children together, three daughters and three sons:

  • Nelson Sanford (1828-1848)
  • David Sanford (1830-1885)
  • Aledah Sanford ( * 1833)
  • Harriette Sanford ( * 1836)

Congressman John Sanford (1851-1939) was his grandson.
