Stephen Sanford

Stephen Sanford ( born May 26, 1826 in Mayfield, New York, † February 13, 1913 in Amsterdam, New York ) was an American politician. Between 1869 and 1871 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives. Congressman John Sanford (1803-1857) was his father and Congressman John Sanford (1851-1939), his son.

Career

Stephen Sanford attended community schools and the local academy in Amsterdam. Then he went for two years on the Georgetown College in Washington DC and later to the United States Military Academy at West Point. As a manufacturer of carpets, he worked from 1844 until his death. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party.

In the congressional elections of 1868 for the 41st Congress Sanford was the 18th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of James M. Marvin on March 4, 1869. Since he gave up for reelection in 1870, he retired after March 3, 1871 from the Congress.

As a delegate, he took in 1876 at the Republican National Convention in Cincinnati in part. He died on 13 February 1913 in Amsterdam and was then buried in the Green Hill Cemetery.
