John Swinburne (Scottish politician)

John Swinburne ( born July 4, 1930 in Pennsylvania) is a politician in Scotland and member of the Scottish Senior Citizens Unity Party ( SSCUP ).

Life

When John Swinburne was seven years old, his family moved to Motherwell. He attended Dalziel High School and then worked as an engineer and freelance journalist. In addition, he was president of the football club FC Motherwell and wrote several books, including the book of photographs Motherwell Football Club and the chronicle of Motherwell Football Club: A History of "The Steelmen ", 1886-1986.

Political career

Swinburne is co-founder of SSCUP and joined the Scottish Parliament elections in 2003 as the leading candidate in the election Region Central Scotland. Although the party was able to reach only 6.5 % of the vote, it was enough to obtain a parliamentary seat. In addition, Swinburne ran for the direct mandate in the constituency Motherwell and Wishaw, but became only the fifth highest number of votes. However, he managed to get as the candidate of the Liberal Democrats more votes. In his time as an MEP to Swinburne dealt with the topics of the elderly and education. 2006 Swinburne began in schools for the reintroduction of corporal punishment. The proposal met with widespread rejection. In the parliamentary elections of 2007, the SSCUP lost its mandate. Swinburne ran again in the constituency of Motherwell and Wishaw, but had no chance. In 2009, the Labour politician Michael Martin returned his House mandate of the constituency Glasgow North East and new elections were scheduled for the constituency. After Swinburne initially announced to want to run as his successor, he withdrew due to unforeseen circumstances in October of this year. Swinburne also joined in the general elections again for his constituency to, but could not get the majority vote. To date, Swinburne is the only politician of SSCUP who could win a seat in parliament.
