John Tinsley

Ernest John Tinsley (* March 22, 1919; † July 20, 1992 in Oxford ) was a British Anglican theologian. He was Bishop of Bristol, between 1976 and 1985.

Life and career

Tinsley was born into a family of farmers and attended the University of Durham. Later he was at the Hill University as a lecturer, where he established the field of theology.

After his ordination in 1943 he was the chaplain for the communities of Durham and Westoe. Subsequently, he was from 1961 to 1975 professor at the University of Leeds.

Tinsley left the university in 1976. He was appointed Bishop of Bristol, and held this office until 1985. Subsequently, he wrote books and was a lecturer at various universities.

Tinsley was from 1982 to 1985 as a clergyman Lord the House of Lords on.

He was married to Marjorie Dixon and had two daughters.
