John Wilson (mathematician)

John Wilson ( born August 6 1741 Applethwaite, Westmorland, † October 18, 1793 in Kendal, Westmorland ) was a British mathematician and a lawyer.

Wilson studied at Cambridge with Edward Waring and taught there from 1764 to 1766 mathematics. Named after him is the set of Wilson from number theory. In 1766 he began his legal career as a barrister. In 1783 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.
