Johnny Dundee

Johnny Dundee, actually Giuseppe Carrora, ( born November 22, 1893 in Sciacca, Italy, † April 22, 1965 in East Orange, New Jersey ) was an American boxer.

Life

In 342 battles in the spring - to lightweight he only went twice KO, but only won 22 times by KO. At the light- weight he lost on a regular basis against boxers like Lew Tendler and Benny Leonard, but in the lower weight classes he was superior.

Dundee was born in Sicily and started in 1910 with the professional boxing. He boxed in the No Decision era in 1912 unofficially draw in a world championship bout against featherweight Johnny Kilbane and an official draw 1913. Was not until eight years later in 1921 with already 264 completed fights he could again fight for a title, he won the super featherweight title by disqualification against the dreaded southpaw George Chaney, whom he had beaten but even before then.

In 1922 he won the featherweight title in the NYSAC version. In 1923 he was defeated at first Jack Bernstein at the super featherweight crown, but then hit the hard beating Frenchman Eugene Criqui in a union of the featherweight title he had four times on the ground, which refers to the Ring Magazine as his greatest achievement, and won back also the super featherweight title against Bernstein.

From 1924, he said the limit of the spring weight not being able to install and also lost the super featherweight title in 1926, he tried again in vain in a super featherweight title fight in 1927, he joined against none other than Tony Canzoneri on to the featherweight title. By 1932, he trailed off his career. The Ring Magazine referred to him as the fourth best Italian-born boxer of all time. 1991 was Dundee induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

The former Muhammad Ali 's trainer Angelo Dundee and his brother Chris, whose real birth name is Merena, named themselves after Johnny Dundee.
