Angelo Dundee

Angelo Dundee ( born August 30, 1921 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, † February 1, 2012 in Tampa, Florida), actually Angelo Mirena, was an American boxing coach. He and his brother named themselves after the former boxer Johnny Dundee.

Career

Dundee was born in 1921 in Philadelphia as one of seven children of Italian Einwander from Calabria. He learned a lot about boxing training as a student of Lou Stillman. Dundee went to New York City and then to Miami, Florida, where he opened the " Fifth Street Gym ". Carmen Basilio was Dundee's first boxer who became world champion. Tony DeMarco he had previously trained for a world championship fight at welterweight. From then on, many young talents came into his boxing school from which emerged some of the greatest boxers in history. Dundee achieved international fame as Muhammad Ali himself took the world heavyweight championship from Sonny Liston. Even when Ali was a member of the radical Black Muslims, he refused to be trained by someone other than Dundee, although this was whiter skin color. Some Black Muslims, Elijah Muhammad, for example, tried to force Ali to to separate from Dundee, but both respected and became friends.

Angelo Dundee traveled with Ali around the world and was for Ali the strategic key figure in the fight with Archie Moore, Floyd Patterson, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Ken Norton and Leon Spinks later. Dundee was accused by Foreman to have 1974 loosened the ropes at the Rumble in the Jungle, to give Ali the victory, but Foreman later withdrew these allegations. 1994 Dundee was even in Foreman's corner when he succeeded, with a victory over Michael Moorer back to win a World Cup title, thus becoming the oldest heavyweight champion of all time. After Ali's retirement from active boxing Dundee recognized the coming BoxStar in Sugar Ray Leonard, whom he called " a smaller version of Ali ". Dundee led Leonard to many of his greatest victories, such as the struggles against Wilfred Benitez, Roberto Duran and Thomas Hearns. When Leonard first met on Hearns, Dundee thought, his protege would be back on points, and called to him before the 13th round, " You're blowing it, son! You're blowing it! " ( " You mess up there! "). Leonard then won in the 14th round by whacked

Dundee trained fifteen boxing champions, including Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Jose Napoles, Jimmy Ellis, Carmen Basilio and Luis Rodriguez and was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 1994. He was engaged to actor Russell Crowe to train the comeback for his portrayal of Jim Braddock in the film, and traveled to Australia to Crowe, who then received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor for this film.

Angelo Dundee died on February 1, 2012 in Tampa, surrounded by his family. A week earlier he had been treated for blood clots in hospital, but then returned home.
