Johnny Rutherford

John "Johnny" Sherman Rutherford ( born March 12, 1938 in Coffeyville ) is a retired American race car driver.

Life

Johnny Rutherford won three times in his career, the 500-mile race at Indianapolis. In 1974 he won in a McLaren M16 just before Bobby Unser in an Eagle 74 Two years later he again drove a McLaren M16 to victory. He celebrated his third victory in 1980 at the wheel of a Chaparral 2K. 1980 was won by the Americans and the CART Championship, the successor series of USAC Championship.

Rutherford was from 1963 to 1988 at 35 NASCAR-R Ennen at the start. His very first race in 1963, he could win. Shortly before the 500-mile race at Indianapolis in 1994, for which he could not qualify, Rutherford resigned from active racing.

After his racing career, he worked as a racing official and is currently working in a managerial function in the Indy Racing League. He also goes for all races except the Indy 500, the Safety Car.
