Johnstone

Johnstone (Gaelic: Baile Eoin ) is a town in the Scottish unitary authority Renfrewshire. It is located about five kilometers west of Paisley and 25 km north of Kilmarnock on the southern shore of the Black Cart Water. By John Stone Mill, a monument of the highest category A Scottish monument is located in Johnstone.

History

The town developed the textile industry in the late 18th century. Built in 1782 textile mill Old Cotton Mill End at the time was the largest of its kind in Scotland. Large parts of the city were designed as a planned settlement of numerous textile mills. 1841 16 textile mills in Johnstone have already been counted. 1811 reached the Glasgow, Paisley and Ardrossan Canal Johnstone. Until its closure in 1885, Johnstone was the terminus of the channel. Later, other industries settled in Johnstone, among others, the sectors mechanical engineering, metalworking, chemicals and paper. In addition, coal was mined in Johnstone.

In the census in 1811 lived 3647 people in Johnstone. Within 60 years, the population had more than doubled in 7538. By 1971, it rose gradually on 22,617. Since then, a population decrease was recorded on last 16 468 in 2001.

Traffic

Through the leading of Paisley to Irvine A737 Johnstone is directly connected to the road network. Since 1840, Johnstone was connected by various lines of the Glasgow and South Western Railway in the railway network. Today the station on the Ayrshire Coast Line First ScotRail is operated. With the Glasgow Airport is an international airport located six kilometers away. Until 1966 the area was served by the Renfrew Airport.
