Joost van Vollenhoven

Joost van Vollenhoven ( born July 21, 1877 in Rotterdam, † July 20, 1918 in Montgobert, France ) was a French army officer and colonial administrator, who came from the Dutch patrician family Van Vollenhoven.

At the age of 22 years - his family lived as colonists in Algeria - he was naturalized as a Frenchman. Van Vollenhoven was Governor-General of French Indochina and from 1917 until his death, Governor-General of French West Africa. He is mainly known for its resistance to further recruitment of African troops in French West Africa.
