Jorge Palma

Jorge Manuel de Abreu Palma ( born June 4, 1950 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese songwriter and rock musician.

Life

He began playing the piano at the age of six years. At age 13, he took second place in a Youth Music Competition in Palma de Mallorca. In 1964, he turned away from classical music and devoted himself to the pop / rock. On their own initiative, he learned to play the guitar, and played first time in 1967 in a band, the Black Boys, which mainly consisted of musicians from Santarém and tried in the Algarve, to live from their music. In 1969 he was part of the group Sindikato (also Sindicato ), which initially played hard rock, but then progressively moving towards the jazz-rock. They came in 1971 with the first edition of the Festival de Vilar de Mouros on, and took until its dissolution a single and an album of cover versions.

His first record took Palma in 1972 with the single The Nine Billion Names Of God. In the same year he broke his 1969 recorded his engineering studies at the University of Lisbon and went on a journey through Canada, the USA, and the Caribbean. 1973, after he finished the improvement of his lyrics hours at Ary dos Santos, Palma published his first Portuguese-language single, A Última Canção ( Eng.: The last song ).

In order to avoid being drafted into the army and an insert in the Portuguese Colonial War, Palma went in 1973 with his first wife Gisela Branco to Copenhagen, where he worked as an assistant at the local Sheraton hotel. After the Carnation Revolution in 1974, he returned to Portugal, where he worked as a reinforced songwriter and arranger for other musicians, including for Amália Rodrigues. In 1975 he released his first album Com Uma Viagem na Palma since Mão (German: With a trip to the palm ). 1983 his first son, Vicente was born. With his next album O Lado Errado da Noite ( Eng.: The wrong side of the night) he gained more attention for the first time in Portugal. In 1986, he completed his piano studies at the National Conservatory (now the Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema and Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa ) from, and recorded his seventh album. There followed a number of other publications, in addition to works for the theater. In the 1990s, he appeared primarily with interpretations of his own pieces.
