Ary dos Santos

José Carlos Ary dos Santos ( born December 7, 1937 in Lisbon, † January 18, 1984 ) was a Portuguese poet, song writer and reciter.

Life

He was born in a wealthy family with aristocratic roots. At 14, he published his first poems, and already appeared with 16 of his poems in the anthology of literature - price Almeida Garrett. In 1954 he left home and earned his livelihood with various activities, such as the distribution of gumball machines and in advertising. He studied literature and law at the University of Lisbon, without a degree.

In 1963 his first book, the poetry collection A Liturgia do Sangue (English: The Liturgy of the blood). In the following years a number of poetry publications published by him. He also appeared with recitations of classic Portuguese writers, some of which to this day are available as audio recordings, for example, his interpretations of works by Bocage, Camões and the preaching of Santo António to the fish, of Father António Vieira.

The Salazar regime set dismissive of, he participated in 1969 at the comissões Democráticas Eleitorais from which the party Movimento Democrático Português ( MDP / CDE) emerged. Still in 1969, he joined the illegal Portuguese Communist Party ( Partido Comunista Português, PCP), and was active in the literary circles.
